About

Welcome to Barossa Network, a groundbreaking network stack built by Reticulum, designed to enable secure, anonymous, and permission-less digital communication.

Our mission is to provide reliable and efficient tools for creating long-range communication networks in our community that operate without centralised control or gate-keeping.

Our Vision

We believe in the power of minimal-infrastructure communication systems that empower individuals and communities to exchange information freely, securely, and anonymously. Our ultimate goal is to make it possible for anyone to be their own network operator, fostering a landscape of independent, interconnected, and autonomous networks.

What is Reticulum?

Reticulum is a versatile and open-source network stack that can be used to develop and deploy networks across a wide range of physical mediums. Whether it’s packet radio links over VHF frequencies, 2.4 GHz networks using off-the-shelf radios, or common LoRa development boards, Reticulum adapts to the available resources and requirements.

Our stack is designed to function reliably even under very low bandwidth conditions, with transmission capacities as low as 5 bits per second. It prioritises encryption by default, ensuring that all communications are secure and private.

Core Principles

Open Source Software Stack: Reticulum is built entirely with open-source software, ensuring transparency, security, and accessibility for everyone.

Hardware Layer Agnosticism: Our network stack is fully hardware agnostic, meaning it can operate over a variety of physical networking layers such as data radios, serial lines, modems, handheld transceivers, wired Ethernet, WiFi, and more.

Very Low Bandwidth Requirements: Reticulum is designed to function efficiently over links with minimal transmission capacity.

Encryption by Default: Strong encryption is used for all communications to ensure privacy and security.

Initiator Anonymity: Users can communicate over Reticulum networks without revealing their identities.

Unlicensed Use: Reticulum operates over physical communication mediums that do not require any licenses, making it accessible to a wide audience.

Supplied Software: In addition to the core networking stack and API, we provide a set of basic Reticulum-based communication tools to help users get started.

Ease of Use: The reference implementation of Reticulum is written in Python, making it accessible even to those with basic programming experience.

Low Cost: Setting up a Reticulum-based communication system is cost-effective, often requiring less than $100 in off-the-shelf hardware.
